Tips for the Best Headshots

At Kidlette, our business includes not only family and high school senior sessions, but also content creation, brand imagery, and headshots in Detroit.

A headshot is more than just a simple up-close photo. It’s a portrayal of you, your personal brand, and your reputation. We’ll go over all the details leading up to your session, but here’s our top tips for looking your best – both confident and approachable from your Detroit headshot photographer.

Hair and Makeup for Headshots

1. Keep it authentic and genuine, what you wear – your clothes, hair, and makeup, should speak to who you are at your best. That means dress up if that’s what you to do, but if your day to day look is more casual it’s best to stick with what you’re comfortable in. You can find our specific tips on hair & makeup here.

2, Put on your favorite suit, shirt, jewelry, and/or your best shoes. They may not be in the shot, but if you absolutely love them and they make you feel good, that confidence that will carry over to your portraits. If you’re interested, we also have an entire post on what to wear.

3. Less is more. Wasn’t it Coco Chanel that said take one piece off before you head out the door? You don’t have to wear it all at once. Bring a few options with you to switch out – a different shirt, jacket, sweater, or accessories will change things up.

4. Put together different outfits and see how things work together beforehand. Move around, look in the mirror, see if your significant other gives you a second glance. You will know when you have it right!
